Rodent Control in your Corpus Christi area Home

Winter is here, but are the rodents, rats, and mice in your home, too? House mouse (Mus musculus), roof rats, Norway rats, and other types of rodents may enter your home and set up Hotel Rodentia in your Corpus Christi area home.

Rodents create many problems. They carry diseases, including salmonella, leptospirosis, and hantavirus. They also damage walls, documents, or carpeting, and contaminate food. Their feces also can cause allergic reactions.

Get rid of mice and rats from your home and eliminate rodent problems in the future. Know the signs of an infestation, and learn what to do about house mice, rats, or other rodents besides just setting mouse traps, set traps or bait, and hope for the best.

Signs of Rats and Mice

If you see these signs of activity in your home, take action now.

  • Squeaking or scratching

Mice and rats are nocturnal. They will make noise when they explore, forage, or fight each other for territory. They also may chew the walls.

  • Sightings

You are unlikely to see a mouse or rat unless your infestation is serious. If you see a rodent, it's time to take action.

  • Rat or Mouse Poop

Mouse droppings look like dark grains of rice. Rat droppings are larger and may be rounded or pointed at the ends, depending on the rat species.

  • Nesting Material

Look for shredded paper, soft bits of wood shavings, feathers or pillow stuffing, or wall insulation as evidence of nesting.

  • Other signs

You might see tiny footprints outside or in spilled piles of food they have pilfered.

Your pets have acute senses and may demonstrate alert behavior if they detect a rodent nearby. This isn't enough for a rodent diagnosis by itself, though.

Eliminate Rodent Attractants

Rodents have an acute sense of smell. They most likely can smell the food while you're cooking, if they have gained entry and are living somewhere in a pantry or the walls. Food and other attractants should be tightly sealed.

  • Food Storage

To keep the smell of food from attracting a mouse or rat, seal all your pet food, dry goods, and other food in airtight containers. Place these on a high shelf away from anywhere a rodent could reach. Birdseed or planting seeds should be cleaned from bird cages, bird feeders, and garage or shed storage units and stored in airtight containers.

  • Proper Sanitation

Ignore the myth that a dirty home attracts rodents. It doesn't. But a regular cleaning regimen in your home will prevent them from exploring, especially rats, which are suspicious of newness in their territory.

Consider purchasing an automatic vacuum that can run every night to frighten rodents away. Never leave food scraps or dirty dishes lying around or in the sink.

  • Pick up your Property

Fallen fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of nutrition. Also, remove fallen leaves or branches from your property.

  • Compost and Firewood Pile tips:

Place compost (especially food compost) and firewood piles on a platform at least 20 feet from the house and at least one foot off the ground. Install a metal screen with a 1/4 inch gage around the platform. Rodents can squeeze into holes 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter.

  • Garbage disposal

Don't leave garbage in the bins inside overnight. Ensure your outdoor garbage bin has a tight lid. If needed, close the bin and keep it upright with bungee cords or rope. Keep the exterior garbage bins at least 20 feet from your home.

Prevent Rodents from Entering

Rats can fit into gaps as small as 1/2 in diameter. Mice can fit into gaps smaller than the diameter of a dime. Follow these directions to seal your home. Use steel wool, copper wire mesh, silicone caulking, or metal screens with a gauge of 1/4 inch or smaller.

Find and seal these possible entry points:

  • Gaps or crevices around the foundation, sill plates, doors, and windows.
  • Gaps in siding, especially gaps that are one foot off the ground or less.
  • Gaps around electrical, water, or gas pipes.
  • Larger gaps around brick chimneys or fireplaces. Supplement this with caulking or steel wool if necessary.
  • Trim shrubbery at least one foot from the home, and cut tree branches five feet from the roof. Some rodents, like roof rats and house mice, are excellent climbers. This will also deter other pests from roof access, such as raccoons or squirrels.

Professional Rodent Control

Some homeowners set live traps, glue traps, rodent bait, bait stations, and good old peanut butter traps, which are available for over-the-counter purchase to get rid of rats and mice. However, to maintain the safety of children or pets, we discourage the use of live traps or rodent bait without professional assistance. A homeowner with nothing but their wits, an instruction manual, some YouTube videos, and a trap could accidentally contract diseases from an infected rat or mouse.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
