Which Spiders Are Dangerous In Texas?

There are many spiders in Texas that could end up in your Corpus Christi area home. Although not all spiders are poisonous, many can cause problems. Itchy spider bites and pesky webs are enough to make some homeowners uncomfortable. This article will break down which two species of spiders are dangerous and how you can remove spiders from your house.

Black Widow

The Black Widow spider is very poisonous and is well known throughout the state of Texas. The female black widow can be identified by her shiny black body with a red hourglass shape on her underbelly. A male black widow can be spotted by his yellow and red marks on his back. Males will also have much longer legs and smaller abdomens compared to their female counterparts. Adult black widows grow to be about 0.5 to 1.5 inches long.

The female black widow can carry venom that is 15 times more toxic than the venom from a rattlesnake. It is classified as neurotoxic, which means it disturbs the nervous system. Luckily, only a small amount of venom is released through a bite. Bites can cause swelling, pain, muscle cramps, aches, sweating, nausea, fever, and difficulty breathing. These bites affect young children and the elderly more than they would a healthy adult.

They seek to live in hidden spots. They will often hang out in outdoor woodpiles, under rocks, in sheds, garages or basements. Black widow spiders are usually not aggressive but will protect themselves when something or someone impedes upon their habitat.

Brown Recluse

The brown recluse spider resides mainly in Texas and packs a dangerous bite. You can spot a brown recluse by its uniform tan or brown body and legs. Its only variation in color is a dark brown violin shape on its back on some brown recluse spiders. Brown recluse adults are about the size of a quarter.

These spiders hide out during the day and usually hunt at night. They live in dark and safe areas such as woodpiles, attics, basements, or garages. They will not seek to bite people. However, they will not hesitate to bite if they feel trapped. Often, a brown recluse will find safety in a shoe or jacket, only for a person to put it on during the next day. The spider may then bite the person in an attempt to escape.

Bites from a brown recluse may affect people differently. Often, you will not feel the bite until several hours later. For some, it could cause swelling and tenderness in the area. For others, it could cause the skin cells around the bite to die, which leads to a sinking patch of skin with irregular edges and has a blue-ish hue.

How to Remove Them

It’s essential that homeowners work to remove any poisonous spiders before an infestation occurs. Spider traps and spider spray can be used to reduce the amount of spiders. We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
